The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, approved today the adoption of a new symbol for the Saudi Riyal, marking a historic step toward strengthening the national currency’s identity.
According to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), Ayman bin Mohammed Al-Sayari, Governor of the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA), expressed his profound gratitude to King Salman and His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, on the occasion of launching the Saudi Riyal symbol.
Al-Sayari commended the dedicated efforts that led to this achievement and acknowledged the collaboration of all parties involved in the project spearheaded by SAMA. Key contributors included the Ministry of Culture, Media, and the Saudi Standards, Metrology, and Quality Organization.
He emphasized that this initiative aims to foster national pride and cultural identity while enhancing the recognition and trust in the Saudi Riyal. The move also underscores Saudi Arabia’s standing among the world’s leading economies and G20 nations, highlighting the growing significance of the national currency in the global financial system.
Design Reflects Heritage & Modernity
Al-Sayari noted that the newly introduced symbol reinforces the financial identity of the Kingdom locally, regionally, and internationally. The symbol, inspired by Arabic calligraphy, incorporates the name of the national currency, “Riyal,” reflecting Saudi Arabia’s rich cultural heritage and traditions.
Implementation of the new symbol will commence immediately, with gradual integration across financial transactions, commercial dealings, and various applications in coordination with relevant official authorities.
As Saudi Arabia advances its Vision 2030 goals, the launch of the Saudi Riyal symbol underscores the Kingdom’s commitment to strengthening its financial system and expanding its regional and global influence. This step not only enhances the representation of the Saudi Riyal across diverse platforms but also reinforces national pride and cultural belonging, further cementing Saudi Arabia’s position within major global economies and the G20.
