The Dawn of a Promising Career
Born in 1959 in Sakaka, Al-Jouf, Saudi Arabia, Professor Nayef Al-Rodhan completed his secondary education in 1975 before traveling to the UK to pursue a medical degree at Newcastle University. After earning his degree, he returned to Saudi Arabia and worked as a resident doctor in the Neurosurgery Department at King Faisal Specialist Hospital between 1984 and 1986. This laid the foundation for his subsequent international career in neurosurgery.
The Rise of a Scientist
Al-Rodhan’s passion for neuroscience led him to the United States, where he began his neurosurgery training and neuroscience research at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. Under the mentorship of renowned neurologist Lord John Walton, he advanced quickly, becoming Chief Resident in the Neurosurgery Department. In 1988, he earned a Ph.D. for his research on opioid and neurotensin receptor subtypes in the brain.
Assuming Prestigious Positions
Al-Rodhan’s scientific journey continued with numerous prestigious positions. He joined Yale University’s Neurosurgery Department in 1993 as a fellow in epilepsy surgery and molecular neuroscience. A year later, he received a fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital at Harvard Medical School, focusing on neuropeptides, molecular genetics, and neuronal regeneration. By 1995, he had joined the faculty at Harvard Medical School and collaborated with Nobel laureate James E. Muller to establish the neurotechnology program at Massachusetts General Hospital.

In 2002, Al-Rodhan expanded his research to include the intersection of neuroscience and international relations. He explored the neurochemical and cellular mechanisms behind emotions and their impact on contemporary geopolitical trends. His pioneering work led him to become a Senior Fellow at the Geneva Center for Security Policy in 2006, and later, a Senior Member at St. Antony’s College, Oxford University. In 2014, he was named Honorary Fellow of St. Antony’s College and continued his work analyzing key turning points in the Arab-Islamic world’s geopolitical relevance.
In 2020, Al-Rodhan became a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Philosophy, University of London, and joined the Global Future Council on Frontier Risks at the World Economic Forum.

In 2007, he introduced Symbiotic Realism, which examines global relations through the lenses of human nature, global anarchy, connectivity, and interdependence. He was named among the Top 30 Most Influential Neuroscientists in 2014 and ranked among the Top 100 Geostrategists in 2017. In 2022, he was nominated as one of the Top 50 Researchers likely to shape 21st-century politics and policy.

Throughout his career, Al-Rodhan has won over eight prestigious prizes, including the Sir James Spence Prize, the Gibb Prize, the Farquhar-Murray Prize, and the Menninger Prize.
