When I recently received an invitation from King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy in Saudi Arabia to deliver a lecture titled “Entrepreneurial Insights in the Energy Sector,” I was reminded that the global conversation about energy has shifted dramatically. What was once the domain of massive utilities and oil conglomerates is now increasingly defined by startups, innovators, and visionary entrepreneurs who see opportunity in transformation.
Today, energy is no longer just a matter of extraction and consumption. It is about reinvention — an ongoing effort to redefine how humanity powers its homes, cities, industries, and dreams. Around the world, ambitious founders are rewriting the rules of the sector, fusing sustainability with profitability, and accelerating the transition toward a cleaner, smarter, more decentralized future.

The global energy industry is undergoing one of the most profound transformations in its history. For more than a century, economic growth was tethered to fossil fuels. Similarly, Egypt’s KarmSolar started as a small startup in solar energy and is now a regional powerhouse, delivering clean power solutions across North Africa and the Middle East.
These companies prove that innovation is not bound by geography. With the right vision, strategy, and ecosystem, regional startups can compete — and lead — on the global stage.

At King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), the Energy Innovation Center supports startups working on energy and water technologies, offering access to advanced labs, funding, and business mentorship. Meanwhile, Egypt’s Teqdar Go Green Accelerator, launched by Banque Misr in collaboration with UNIDO, empowers startups focused on recycling, renewable energy, and waste-to-energy technologies.
Such initiatives create fertile ground for entrepreneurship — providing the resources, networks, and confidence innovators need to scale their impact.

This ecosystem is characterized by decentralization, intelligence, and sustainability. Homes generate their own power. Cities operate on predictive analytics. Investors fund startups that merge data and energy. Governments implement progressive policies to encourage green transition.
