6 Essential Traits of Successful Entrepreneurs

By Matthew Toren

Over the years, we have explored the experiences of countless successful entrepreneurs and asked many of them how they define success. Their answers varied widely, revealing something we all know: success means different things to different people.

For some, success is not complete without a substantial fortune in the bank. For others, simply knowing that their family is healthy, secure and well cared for is enough to make them feel successful.

For a growing number of entrepreneurs, however, success means giving back and making a meaningful contribution to improving the world around them.

Two Sides of Success

Regardless of how you define success, it is likely to have two sides:

The first is the business and financial achievements that most entrepreneurs strive to attain.

These may include running a profitable business, having a certain amount of money in the bank, driving a particular car, living in a specific neighborhood, traveling the world and enjoying the other “things money can buy.”

The second involves the things that give people a genuine sense of fulfillment but cannot be purchased with money. These include building a family, having time to spend with loved ones, feeling comfortable with who you are and where you are in life, earning the respect of your peers, and maintaining good physical and mental health. For many people, it also includes some form of spiritual connection.

Both sides matter, and true success is difficult to achieve without satisfying both.

If you have $1 billion in the bank but are miserable, bitter and in poor health, few people would describe you as successful.

Conversely, it is extremely difficult to enjoy wonderful relationships and feel content with yourself and your life if you are constantly worried about your career and financial situation. This is particularly true for entrepreneurs. If you are a monk, the financial side may not be important to your happiness, but you probably are not reading this article in the first place.

We often hear this entire concept described as “work-life balance,” something many entrepreneurs struggle to achieve. With that in mind, here are six traits we believe successful entrepreneurs tend to share, qualities that contribute to success both at work and in life.

Successful Entrepreneurs

1. They Are Optimistic

Entrepreneurs who achieve success in their professional and personal lives tend to be optimistic.

Whether they are talking about their businesses or their personal lives, they generally focus more on solutions than problems. They do not remain trapped in past failures; instead, they concentrate on future opportunities.

That does not mean successful entrepreneurs ignore challenges. They recognize them realistically, but they expect positive outcomes and confront obstacles with an optimistic mindset.

And when things do not go as planned despite their optimism, they do not allow failure to discourage them for long.

Instead, they learn from their mistakes and setbacks and apply what they have learned to the next challenge.

2. They Are Passionate

The most successful entrepreneurs are passionate about what they do, and that passion is evident in the way they speak and act.

Of course, they may also be enthusiastic about spending a weekend with their families or traveling somewhere far away. But they are not among those people who dread the arrival of Monday morning.

Their passion is visible in both their work and their personal lives. If they find themselves doing something they dislike, they are unlikely to remain in that situation for long. Instead, they look for an alternative that motivates and inspires them.

Passion becomes fuel for both their businesses and their personal lives.

Not every passionate entrepreneur is loud or visibly enthusiastic. Some are quieter and more reserved. But when you talk to them about their work, their passion becomes unmistakable.

3. They Are Persistent

Entrepreneurs who achieve balanced success do so through persistence and determination.

It is not necessarily because they encounter fewer dead ends than people who do not succeed. Rather, they keep moving forward when obstacles appear.

They face challenges and setbacks, overcome them and continue learning throughout the journey.

The idea of giving up just before achieving a major breakthrough is deeply frustrating to them. Because their work is driven by passion, persistence does not feel like a burden; it gives them energy and satisfaction.

Successful entrepreneurs see challenges as opportunities rather than reasons to quit. Obstacles motivate them to push harder.

“Bring it on!” is the mindset of a successful, persistent entrepreneur.

4. They Are Flexible

The ability to change direction when necessary can play a major role in achieving success.

Successful business owners make plans and follow them, but they also understand that unexpected developments will inevitably arise. When they do, successful entrepreneurs are prepared and able to adapt to changing circumstances and turn change into opportunity.

You will not hear them constantly wishing for the return of “the good old days.” Instead, they appreciate progress and respond flexibly to change or take action to change what they do not like.

They apply the same flexibility to their personal lives that they use in business, helping them achieve the balance they recognize as essential to genuine success.

Unexpected challenges arise in life just as they do in business, and successfully navigating both requires considerable flexibility.

5. They Are Lifelong Learners

Being a “learner” does not necessarily mean earning formal qualifications. For successful entrepreneurs, it means having a continuous desire to acquire knowledge.

Read almost any success story, from Sam Walton, the founder of Walmart who did not complete high school, to Reid Hoffman, the co-founder of LinkedIn who earned degrees from Stanford and Oxford, and you will find someone committed to learning and personal development throughout life.

Successful people learn as much as they can about the subjects that interest and inspire them. They do not need to be academically inclined to pursue knowledge; they simply seek to understand as much as possible about the areas that matter most in their lives.

Whether they attend workshops on social media marketing or read a book about effective parenting, successful entrepreneurs devote a significant portion of their “nonproductive” time to feeding their minds with new knowledge.

6. They Stay Focused on Their Goals

Successful entrepreneurs achieve success in both their professional and personal lives because they remain focused on achieving it.

More importantly, they think long term and keep their eyes on what might be called their “big vision.”

Whether they are managing their personal finances or launching and growing new businesses, successful people understand that short-term sacrifices can lead to significant long-term gains.

They also recognize that short-term victories matter, but their real value comes from the way they contribute to long-term success.

As a result, they are not easily distracted by the temptation of quick gains or by things that could cause them to neglect their personal responsibilities.

Instead, they focus on activities that help them achieve their vision and move closer to their own definition of genuine success.
