In a significant move that has reverberated throughout the artificial intelligence community, Elon Musk’s xAI has recently dismissed around 500 employees from its data annotation team, representing approximately one-third of the department.
xAI’s Major Workforce Shake-Up
The move forms part of a strategic restructuring designed to scale back generalist AI tutor positions and redirect the company’s efforts toward specialized AI trainers.
Implemented with immediate effect, the layoffs reflect xAI’s broader push to accelerate development in specific areas, despite the substantial reduction in its workforce.
Remarkably, employees were informed of the decision in an email sent late Friday, which explained the company’s new direction and the reasoning behind the restructuring.
“After a comprehensive review of our human data efforts, we have decided to accelerate the expansion of specialist AI trainers and reduce our focus on generalist roles. As a result, most generalist positions are no longer required, and your employment with xAI will conclude,” the email stated.
Those affected will continue receiving their salaries until their contracts end, or until November 30 at the latest, while their access to the company’s systems was revoked immediately after they were notified.
The Human Workforce Behind Grok
xAI’s data annotation team, one of its largest departments, has played a pivotal role in training the company’s AI chatbot, Grok, to understand and interact with the world.
Employees carried out essential tasks by classifying raw data and arranging it into structured contexts, creating the foundation of Grok’s learning process.
At its peak, the team’s main Slack channel had more than 1,500 members.
However, screenshots obtained by Business Insider showed that the figure had sharply declined to around 1,000 as the downsizing progressed. The reduction signals the scale of the transition and xAI’s focus on consolidating talent into specialized positions.
From Generalists to AI Specialists
Alongside the layoffs, xAI unveiled plans to increase its specialized AI trainer workforce tenfold.
In a company statement posted on X, xAI said these specialists, spanning areas including science, engineering, medicine, finance, and safety, are anticipated to provide substantial value and help Grok move beyond the constraints of a generalist learning model.
More significantly, the layoffs also came as several senior employees left the company, including the team’s former head, whose accounts on internal platforms were promptly deactivated.
A New Test for xAI’s Remaining Talent
After the layoffs, remaining employees took part in one-on-one sessions to review their current projects, assess their contributions, and identify colleagues showing outstanding performance.
The sessions formed part of a wider evaluation overseen by Diego Passini, the newly appointed team leader who joined xAI in January 2025 and is reportedly taking leave from his undergraduate studies at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
Employees were required to prioritize a series of assessments intended to determine their future positions within the company, covering traditional fields such as science, engineering, programming, finance, and medicine, alongside unconventional areas including “Grok’s personality and behavior” and content moderation for internet subcultures.
Putting Grok to the Test
The testing process also featured assessments aimed at strengthening the AI’s safety through “red-teaming” exercises, along with evaluations for audio and visual content moderation.
Some assessments were administered through CodeSignal, while others were conducted using Google Forms, with each participant required to complete at least one test.
Screenshots show that over 200 employees responded positively to messages from Passini, while more than 100 expressed questions or concerns regarding the process.
The shortened timeframe fueled frustration, with one employee questioning the timing of the tests, particularly in the wake of recent departures.
Some employees also reported that their Slack accounts were deactivated soon after submitting their responses, highlighting the sudden and uncompromising nature of the company’s restructuring.

xAI’s dramatic reorganization reflects the high-stakes nature of AI development, where companies led by visionary entrepreneurs such as Elon Musk often place rapid innovation and specialization ahead of workforce stability.
